SAFETY BELTS

POLICY

I. The operator and each front seat passenger of a motor vehicle who are conducting School Board business or a school-related activity shall be restrained by a safety belt when the vehicle is in motion. This provision is applicable to all vehicles as defined in section 316.003, Florida Statutes, except for the following:

A. A school bus except as required by law;

B. A bus used for Transportation of persons for compensation; C. A farm tractor or implement of husbandry;

D. A truck of net weight of more than five thousand (5,000) pounds; and, E. A motorcycle, moped, or bicycle.

II. A school bus purchased new after December 31, 2000, must be equipped with safety belts or other federally approved restraint system if used for pre-K to grade 12 students. Each passenger shall wear a seatbelt when the bus is in operation.

III. The number of front seat passengers of a pick-up truck required to wear a safety belt shall not exceed the number of safety belts which were installed by the manufacturer.

IV. School bus operators shall wear a seat belt when operating a school bus.
