$5 Million Bilingual Early Learning Literacy Equity Service Grant Recipient
“By developing early literacy skills, students begin kindergarten ready to read. Access to instructional materials that teach letter recognition, phonics, and vocabulary, should be available in every home. To accomplish this goal, we are pleased to announce the launch of Footsteps2Brilliance so every child can enter school already on track to graduate.”     -Superintendent Ken Kenworthy

OkeeReads Summer Reading Challenge

The 2018 Summer Literacy Adventure is geared to help children stay on target, motivated and excited about reading and literacy. During summer vacation, it is important for students of all ages and reading levels to spend time reading and writing on a regular basis.

To make reading even more exciting, we are challenging all of our state’s students to pledge to read as many books as possible throughout the summer break, and hope that you will encourage all of the teachers, students and parents in your school to participate. Each student can fill out his or her pledge on the Just Read, Florida! website at Summer Literacy Pledge. Following the summer break, the department will recognize the top 10 schools with the highest percentage of participation. The school whose students read the most books will receive a surprise visit from First Lady Ann Scott.

Superintendent Kenworthy has issued the OkeeReads Challenge. All students are challenged to read at least 20 minutes each day. This 20 minutes of reading can be individual, with an adult or partner, or using technology resources like Footsteps2Brilliance. The top class at each school with the highest percentage of participation will receive a Popsicle party and a visit from Superintendent Kenworthy! Parents will verify that his/her child has read 20 minutes each day by signing and returning the attached reading pledge.

Incoming Kindergartners also have a summer reading challenge. Preschoolers going into Kindergarten during the 2019-2019 school year are challenged to use Footsteps2Brilliance for 15 minutes every day. The class with the most minutes read will be rewarded with a Popsicle party hosted by Mr. Kenworthy. Download the pledge card for F2B, sign it, and give it to your child's kindergarten teacher during the first week of school.
